Pakistan's Military Gains Popularity After India Conflict – But Will It Last?

Islamabad, Pakistan – On May 9, 2023, Pakistan witnessed massive protests following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Demonstrators, mostly his supporters, stormed military and public properties, including the army’s headquarters and a top general’s residence.

Two years later, on May 11, 2025, similar crowds took to the streets again—but this time, in celebration of the military’s actions during a brief but intense conflict with India. The public praised the army for defending the nation, especially after both sides claimed victory in the four-day clash.

A Gallup Pakistan survey showed that 96% of participants believed Pakistan had won the battle, and 92% said their opinion of the military improved.

From ‘Black Day’ to ‘Day of Righteous Battle’

On May 10, after a ceasefire was brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, Pakistan declared the day as the “Day of Righteous Battle”—a stark contrast to the “Black Day” of May 9, 2023. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the army’s performance a “golden chapter” in military history. Even jailed ex-PM Imran Khan expressed support for the military’s role.

Longstanding Military Influence

Pakistan’s military has historically played a dominant role in politics, strengthened by wars with India. Despite promises to stay out of politics, its influence remains strong. After Khan’s fallout with the army, he was ousted in 2022, followed by harsh crackdowns on his party.

A Short-Lived Surge?

Analysts say such spikes in military popularity are often temporary. Public opinion may change depending on India’s next moves and the future stance of Khan’s party. Many agree the military deserves credit for border defense, but its political involvement remains controversial.

Political analyst Badar Alam warned: “We can’t stay in a constant state of war. Economic recovery must become a priority—otherwise, it will threaten our survival.”
