Ted Danson and Fellow Cheers Stars Honor Late Castmate George Wendt: “A True Craftsman”

Hollywood is mourning the loss of George Wendt, the actor best known as the lovable Norm Peterson from Cheers, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 76.

The news sparked an outpouring of tributes from his friends, co-stars, and fans across the industry.

Ted Danson, Wendt’s longtime Cheers castmate, shared a heartfelt message: “I’m devastated. It’s going to take a long time to accept this. I love you, Georgie.”

John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin, reflected on their years together: “For eleven years, we shared laughs and a front-row seat to one of TV’s greatest friendships. George made it look easy — that was his gift. He was humble, hilarious, and full of heart. I’ll miss our quiet conversations the most.”

Kelsey Grammer simply said: “I believe mourning is private. But I liked George a lot. He was beloved by millions.”

Melissa Joan Hart, who worked with Wendt on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, wrote on Instagram: “Heaven just got a little funnier. George was warm, kind, and professional — a true joy on set.”

Actor Eric Allan Kramer shared fond memories of beers, laughter, and backstage camaraderie during his guest appearance on Cheers: “One of the warmest, funniest guys I’ve ever met. Cheers, George. Thanks for the laughs and the lessons.”

Sportswriter Bill Simmons summed up Wendt’s legacy perfectly: “RIP George Wendt. Norm Peterson was a crucial piece of one of the best sitcoms ever. That final scene — Norm with Sam — says it all.”

Journey Gunderson of the National Comedy Center added, “George made us feel like Norm was family. His work defined warmth, humor, and timeless character.”

Wendt’s career extended far beyond Cheers, with film credits including Dreamscape, House, Fletch, and even Spice World. But it was Norm — barstool philosopher and beer-loving regular — who cemented his place in television history.

As his family grieves in private, fans and colleagues alike raise a glass in honor of the man who made us laugh for over a de

cade. Cheers, George.
