Two people were killed and at least 19 others injured after the Mexican Navy's tall training vessel, the Cuauhtémoc collided with New York City's Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday.

Authorities reported that the ship, carrying 277 people, lost power while the captain was maneuvering, causing it to drift toward the bridge's Brooklyn-side abutment. Dramatic footage captured the vessel's towering masts striking the bridge as it passed underneath, snapping and sending crew members—who had been standing on them—plummeting to the deck.

Eyewitness Nick Corso, a Brooklyn resident, described scenes of panic following the crash. "There was lots of screaming, some sailors hanging from the masts," he told AFP. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene as officials launched an investigation into the incident.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed two fatalities, with two others critically injured. Despite the crash, the bridge sustained no major damage and was reopened after inspection.

The Cuauhtémoc, a 297-foot sailing ship launched in 1982, had departed from Acapulco on April 6, heading for Iceland. The ship lost all three masts in the incident but no one went overboard. It was later towed from the scene.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sorrow over the loss. Officials believe mechanical failure and a power outage caused the co

llision.
